Lincoln Caplice - Photo Journal We came cross this huge salvage yard on our way into San Felipe, Baja. Whilst making the film, we were constantly on the look out for shots that would give the audience a sense of each location. This was just outside San Felipe, Baja. An old mechanic that we came across just as the sun was setting. Again, just another example of the texture and ambiance we’d constantly search out to create a sense of location. The guys that worked there happily posed and smoked a cigarette whilst Andy got some shots. This shot is of Derek outside San Felipe, Baja. He’d begun pre-running and practicing his route and we came over to shoot some of it. This is a particular stretch of the track which runs parallel to the road - normally Andy would operate the camera, but on this day - I strapped in and hung out the window of our van whilst we tracked alongside Derek. Andy controlled the camera remote, whilst Sandy pulled focus. Harrison, Executive Producer of the film, standing proud with his vehicle, dubbed the ‘Trophy Van’. We logged some serious miles in it during the 2-3 months we were making this film. He’d sneak off and clean it occasionally as we’d destroy it with mud, dust and beer cans - thanks for being the driver Harry. This is the owner of the famous fireworks store on the way into San Felipe. We bought a bunch of fireworks off him to shoot a closing sequence to the film, but a few of the crew let them all off whilst celebrating a long day of shooting and we never got to film it. Sandy and Andy in Ensenada. We spent days roaming around the city trying to find shots that would give the audience an insight into what it’s like there. This is just outside of a local football match that we just wandered into. The whole community was eager to have us there, and couldn’t of been kinder to allow us to shoot whilst they enjoyed the match. This is Forrest on his property in the Mojave Desert. We’d go out most mornings and afternoons to shoot sequences of Forrest and the team testing the race bike. I like that you can see these roads going off to nowhere, it would be easy to get lost out there if you didn’t know your way. I think that’s Matt Cherubino on the left taking a photo. I obviously didn’t take this photo, not sure who did - sorry. This is Andy and myself in the back of a Forrest’s truck after shooting a scene of Forrest testing his headlight for the race. I like it as Andy and I spent a lot of time together during the making of this film, often sharing bunk beds or caravans, and this kinda sums it up. Us in the back of a truck, trying to get it done. Another moment shooting on Forrest’s property in the Mojave Desert. He has so many different types of terrain within minutes of his ranch. This is one example, the sand dunes. We’d bring Forrest’s truck out loaded with gear whilst the photographers would ride their own bikes and we’d spend hours shooting lines around the area. This is Andy strapped into the Maxima (a stabilised rig) - the thing weighed a tonne and moving through thick sand for hours is a real testament to his fitness. It allowed us to get smooth shots of the boys in action, in the most remote locations. This is Matt, he was a photographer on the film and such a great guy to have around. Every time we’d be shooting a scene, Matt would be next to us shooting stills - and even though I’d tell him to move out of frame most days, he’d just beam with positivity. Everyone needs a Matt on their productions. This is the race bike at Forrest’s ranch. Figured I’d throw this one in, but pretty straight forward. As close to a group shot as you’ll get of the crew, minus Jam (sorry Jam). From left to right you have Forrest, Tom (photographer), Sandy (1st AC), Andy, Harrison, Myself and Matt (photographer). This is inside Harrison’s beloved Trophy Van. This is the night of the race, probably about 2am - probably had about 3 hours of sleep from the previous day shooting. Can’t use my camera, obviously. It’s Colton wheeling out the race bike whilst Andy films and Forrest mentally preps for what’s ahead. One of the last shots off my camera from the trip. It’s Jam and Andy in the foreground, walking to have a beer at the beach near our house. We’d wrapped shooting in Mexico, and the crew had thought they were done filming. I had to break it to them we needed to go to back up to Santa Barbara to shoot a final interview with Derek before we could wrap our film. Was a nice moment anyway.
